Cavaliers run past Warriors in cross-country

Both the Lakeland girls and boys defeated Nansemond Riv-er by identical scores of 15-50 at Sleepy Hole Park on Wednesday.

In the girls’ race, Jennifer Jiggetts (NR) came in first, followed by Megan Dagenaif (NR), Kelly Askew (LL), Christian Methias (LL),

Lind-sey Dagenaif (NR), Ashley Barber (LL), Elizabeth Saun-ders (LL), and Katie Daughtery (LL). Because the Lady Warriors only had four runners, they were forced to forfeit the final score.

In male competition, Bryan Bunch (first), Andrew Beard (second), Jake Conrad (seventh), Kyle McNamera (eighth), Robert Hedrick (ninth), and Bryan Ashburn (tenth) all scored for the Cavaliers.

Both Warrior teams beat Tigers in volleyball

Nansemond River swept host Oscar Smith in volleyball on Tuesday evening. The Lady Warriors won in straight games, 15-8, 15-11, as Rachele Hirsch handed out nine assists and Whitney Eley blasted five aces. The boys team lost their first game 15-9 before rallying to win 15-4, 15-6.

The teams will host Western Branch, which defeated Lake-land on Tuesday, today, beginning at 5 p.m.

‘Canned Food tournament’ set Nov. 23

The East Suffolk Federated Civil League will be holding its 18th annual &uot;Canned Food Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament&uot; Nov. 23-27 at Booker T. Washington Recreation Center. Eight teams of ages 9-12, 13-17, and 18-and-above will be allowed. Teams may have a maximum of 12 players. All team deposits or registration fees must be paid by Nov. 9.

All team members are required to bring a canned food to each game. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Suffolk Rescue Squad and all food will go to non-profit organizations.

AAU Basketball tryouts held twice a week

Open tryouts for AAU Basketball are being held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays in Oakland Elem-entary School. The schedule is as follows: Boys 12 and 13 years old on Mondays, and girls 11, 12, 13, and 14 on Thurs-days. AAU Basketball coaches needed
