Jessie Dobson turned back 12 shots on Wednesday afternoon for her third shutout of the season, but her Nansemond-Suffolk Academy (3-9-2) field hockey team was unable to push in a goal of its own, tying visiting Norfolk Collegiate (NC) 0-0.

&uot;I think the overtime period was the hardest,&uot; said the cagekeeping Lady Saint, in the midst of what she hopes will be her second All-TCIS team season, &uot;because I had less defense.&uot; Though 11 players play on each side in regulation, only seven take the field for an overtime period.

The Lady Oaks spend the majority of the first half on the offensive, outshooting NSA 6-0. But Dobson and the rest of the NSA defense held them without a goal, and gave the Lady Saints a bit of momentum to start the second half.

Meredith Powell slammed the first shot for the Lady Saints seven minutes into the second half, breaking down the right side of the field. Her shot missed, but she, Heather Car-roll, and Marylin White kept the Lady Oaks at bay for the remainder of the half, grabbing an 8-3 shooting advantage. Again, though, neither team came close enough, and the game headed to overtime.

The extra period was evenly matched, with both teams taking advantage of the other’s reduced (wo)manpower. With five minutes left, Powell broke down the right sideline, and made it all the way to the right corner of the field, just outside of the circle.

She slammed a shot into the middle, where it bounced off a defender and the goalkeeper, and made it into the cage. But because the rules of field hockey state that a goal can only be scored from inside the circle, the score was disallowed, and the game ended in a tie.

&uot;I thought my team played a great game today,&uot; said coach Kathleen Hotte. Her girls will visit Tabb on Friday.
