Edith V. Buttafoco

Edith Volper Buttafoco, 88, died Oct. 15, 2002, at Nansemond Pointe.

Born March 29, 1914, in Nansemond County., she was the daughter of the late Albert C. and Violet Preston Volper and widow of Joseph Buttafoco. She was a life long member of Suffolk Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her niece, Karen Volper Byrum of Suffolk; nephew, A.C. Volper III of Houston, Tex. and several great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday at the graveside in Cedar Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Charles Miller. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. on Thursday.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 20 Interstate Corporate Center, Suite 233, Norfolk, Va. 23502-4006.

Rachel B. Eure

Rachel Brothers Eure, 91, a resident of Summit Square and formerly of Richmond, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002.

She was born April 10, 1911, in Whaleyville, Nansemond County, a daughter of Edward Alonsa and Vandalia Butler Brothers.

She graduated in 1928 from Whaleyville High School where she played girls’ basketball and was a member of the debate team. She graduated from The State Teachers College, now James Madison University in Harrisonburg in 1931 and taught school in Chuckatuck until her marriage in June of 1935, to Arthur Bradley Eure. She made her home in Richmond, where she was a homemaker and a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, prior to moving to Waynesboro in 1995.

She was preceded in death by her husband in January, 1992; two brothers, Edward Alonsa Brothers Jr., and William Quinton Brothers; and one sister, Judith Brothers Pruden.

Surviving are her daughter, Patsy Hersey, and son-in-law, Robin Hersey, of Waynesboro; grandson, Brian Hersey and granddaughter Holland Hersey, also of Waynesboro; four nieces, Martha McMahon, Ann Pruden, Polly Simpson, and Dale Birdsong; and nephew, Peter Pruden.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday in Holland Cemetery, Suffolk.

The family will receive friends at any time at the home of her daughter and son-in-law. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity. The family requests no public viewing.

The family especially wishes to thank the staff at Summit Square for their devotion and loving care.

Doris R. Wheeler

Mrs. Doris R. Wheeler, 210 N. 4th Street, Suffolk, died Oct. 14, 2002. Funeral arrangements are pending. Crocker Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge.
