Casey Butler served for 13 points in his final home game as Nansemond River defeated local rival Lakeland 15-11, 15-7 on Tuesday. Butler (the only four-year letterman on the team), Craig Brooks, Brad Frizzel, and Chris Case went out on a victory in their farewell game.
&uot;Beating Lakeland is a must every year, but here it was a given,&uot; said Brooks, whose team also defeated the Cavaliers on Sept. 19. &uot;It’s sad that this was our last home game, but at least we got to beat them.&uot;
After Butler racked up eight points in the first game, he and Dusty Alexander aced the Warriors to a 7-4 lead in the second. Scott Castello dropped over an ace for Lakeland, but Brooks knocked three points into Cavalier territory to extend the Warrior lead to 10-5.
The teams exchanged possession three times with no scoring, and Matt Revelle served another point for the Cavaliers. Then Case, Alexander, and Daryl Rice served over three more points for the Warriors and Butler slammed over another ace to get within a point of victory. Ken Gaskins scored for Lakeland, but Alexander smashed over a kill to get the ball back for the Warriors, and then served for the match’s final point.
&uot;I felt like I was a little bit off tonight,&uot; said Frizzel, &uot;but my boys were all on.&uot;
His career at Nansemond River may be over, but Frizzel hopes to play on the court for a bit longer. &uot;I’ll probably come back next season and help the team practice.&uot;
