Eric &uot;Cedric&uot; Silver scored 14 points as the King’s Fork Middle School seventh-grade boys grabbed their first victory of the season Tuesday, defeating visiting Forest Glen 28-21.

&uot;My mom wanted to name me Cedric, but nobody could figure out how to spell it!&uot; Silver said of his nickname. &uot;I just kept thinking that we’d win tonight, and by the time there were 10 minutes left, I knew we had it.&uot;

Silver and Donald Hunter gave the Jaguars (1-4) a 6-0 lead over the first two minutes, but Kevin Chapman hit a jumper and Darren Copeland a three-pointer to cut the lead to 6-5 with 12:28 to go.

Silver scored again, but a long shot from Chris Copeland tied the score. Jumpers from Silver and Lorenzo Worrell and a layup by James King upped the lead to 14-8, and a free throw by Kaleb Alexander gave King’s Fork a 15-10 halftime advantage.

The Jaguars showed their defensive skills in the second half, holding the Chargers (2-3)

to five points over the first 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, Silver, Hunter, and Quantrell Skeeter gave King’s Fork a 23-12 lead. Copeland sank a quick pair of three-pointers to get as close as 25-19, but free throws by Silver and Hunter in the last minute kept the Jaguars a safe distance away.

The Lady Jaguars (4-1) rebounded from last Thursday’s loss to John Yeates by beating the Lady Chargers 29-1. Brandi Jackson scored 17 points for King’s Fork, and Margaret Farris had six.

&uot;We knew we had to play a hard game today because of our loss,&uot; said Farris. &uot;We had to think and not just shoot, so we could predict what each other would do.&uot;
