An 11-0 run in the last 4:50 of the fourth quarter allowed Churchland to escape with a 47-38 victory over host Lakeland on Thursday night. After two free throws by Alecia Copeland gave the Lady Cavaliers a 38-36 lead, four different Lady Truckers scored to ice the win.

Churchland nearly ran away with the game in the first quarter, as Chantel Artis-Cherry scored six points and Kendra Smalls five while the Lady Truckers drove to a 19-9 lead.

Latora King cut the lead to nine with a three-pointer to open the second quarter, and she, Shadonna Cox, Whitney Lassiter and Copeland scored as the Lady Cavaliers took a 22-19 lead. Roberta Jenkins and Candance Mason tied the score at 22 at halftime.

Neither team was able to gain more than a two-point advantage for the next 11 minutes, at which time Copeland sank her eighth and ninth points from the one-point line. Artis-Cherry swished a free throw and Jenkins drained a three-pointer to give the Lady Truckers a 40-48 lead, and Mason sank a jumper with 2:47 left.

Lakeland called timeout, but another three-pointer from Jenkins extended the lead to 45-38, and Artis-Cherry and Mason hit free throws to end the contest.

Lakeland (3-4) will next play in the Greyhound Classic at Portsmouth’s Norcom High School, which begins Dec. 26.
