&uot;Vehicle teams&uot; were lucky on the opening day of Suffolk YMCA girls basketball league competition Saturday morning at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy (NSA). After the Suffolk Tractors rolled past Wilbanks, Smith and Thomas 33-16, the Mike Duman car dealership team (Lady Dumanators) charged by O’Connor and Co., Inc. 50-11.

In the opening game, NSA student Paris Grieder, who along with teammate Hannah Trestle brought her school a TCIS junior varsity title last fall, scored 19 points to help the Lady Tractors to victory.

&uot;I hurt my ankle early, so I didn’t know how I would do,&uot; said Grieder. &uot;I think we’ll be pretty good this year, but I’m not saying that we’ll win it all, because there’s a lot of good teams here.&uot;

One such group is the Lady Dumanators, who were lead by Lakeland High School students Latora King and Tanisha Williams in their win. The Lady Cavaliers combined for 36 of their team’s points, and Elyse Edwards added six more.

&uot;We wanted to beat them by at least 30 points, and we did a lot better than that,&uot; said King, a member of the Lakeland varsity team. &uot;I think we’re going to do great this year, because I have faith in me and my team.&uot;
