Mrs. Helen Hood of 3704 Mockingbird Lane, Suffolk, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, in Nansemond Pointe Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

She was a native of Suffolk, and a daughter of the late Daisy Newby Johnson and Johnnie Johnson.

She had retired from Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y., where she had lived for a number of years.

She attended Kapps Memorial Church while in Syracuse, and was a member of Little Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Suffolk.

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband of 45 years, John Hood; son, John A. Newby, and his companion, Pamela Vines; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Emma Herndon; seven nieces; six nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

The funeral will be held at noon Thursday in Little Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Franklin Williams. Interment will be in Little Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Crocker Funeral Home.
