Alecia Harris sneaked through for a layup with five seconds left as Lakeland ended its season with a 32-30 win over visiting Deep Creek on Wednesday night. The game was the farewell night of seniors Whitney Lassiter, Shari Stagg and Gunar Alijevo. Harris led the team with 11 points, with Latora King not far behind with eight. Lassiter was the only senior to score, with two points. The Lady Cavaliers ended their season with an 8-6 record, a reversal of last season.

In junior varsity action, Tanisha Williams, Sharde Brown, Ashley McCord and Natasha Witworth scored all their team’s points as the younger Lady Cavaliers held off Deep Creek for a 46-42 victory. Nine of Brown’s 12 points came in the fourth quarter, including a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left that gave Lakeland an insurmountable lead.

The Lady Cavaliers finished the season at 14-3 (11-3), tying them with Indian River for second in the district (Western Branch finished first).

After Lakesha Edmond and Shamona Wilson burned the Lady Cavalier defense for eight fast-break points to give Deep Creek a 28-24 lead with 3:44 to play in the third quarter, Williams broke a four-minute scoring drought with a jumper to cut the lead to two. Wilson sneaked in for a layup, but McCord and Williams tied the score, and Brown was fouled going for a mid-court shot as the buzzer sounded. She sank all three free throws (her first points of the game) to give the Lady Cavaliers a 33-30 lead.

Brown hit two more free throws to open the fourth quarter, but Amber Worrell and Wilson scored to get the Lady Hornets to within one. But Brown drained the game’s first three-pointer and McCord hit a jumper with 5:11 left to match Lakeland’s biggest lead of the night.

After the Lady Hornets fought their way to 42-39, McCord swished another bucket with 1:31 to play. Wilson hit a wide-open Worrell under the basket for an easy layup at the 1:10 mark, and Wilson hit a free throw with 48 seconds left.

Lakeland inbounded, but the Lady Hornet defense kept them from crossing midcourt, and got the ball back with 33 seconds left. They missed two shots, and Brown snatched a rebound and dribbled up the baseline. She was fouled, and sank both shots to ice the game.
