This week, Suffolk Police are asking for help in tracking down the felons wanted on a variety of charges ranging from failure to pay child support to rape and other sexual crimes.

Since the Crime Line wanted photographs and information have been running in the News-Herald, many of those sought after have been apprehended. All thanks to the help of concerned citizens of Suffolk who want the criminal element off their streets and out of their neighborhoods.

Residents have three tools that help with the apprehension of these people. All they use are a telephone, a pen and paper. By writing down the information about a suspect they spot, they can provide a more complete description of the person listed on the wanted warrants.

Once they have recorded the type of clothing, coloring of clothes, shoes, hair, eyes (if you get close enough), any identifying marks, like tattoos or birth marks, and a description of a vehicle if they’re driving, civilians can call the Crime Line phone to alert police as to the whereabouts of a wanted person or the location of stolen goods, or any other illegal activities including drug deals.

By calling Crime Line, the caller’s identity is highly protected since they never give their name. Callers usually speak with Officer Mike Simpkins, a veteran of the police department, and he assigns them a number for identification when they pick up their cash reward. At no time will a caller ever be asked for name identification. When they meet the person delivering their cash, they simply give the identification number they were assigned.

At times, Off. Simpkins must be out of the Crime Line office and at those times, the caller will reach the Crime Line phone message machine. Do not give your name, but only provide your information and state the time that you will call again so that Simpkins can assign your number.
