Barbara Hicks Peele Edwards, 64, of the 200 block of Cannon Drive, Carrollton, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, in Riverside Regional Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a native of Nansemond County, and a daughter of the late Henry and Katie Boddie Hicks. She was blessed by a loving relationship in the home of the late James F. and Marie J. Peele.

She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Suffolk. She furthered her education at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and obtained an associate degree in nursing from Thomas Nelson Community College. Her entire career was spent serving the needs of others as a nurse and operating room technician. She retired as a nursing supervisor from Sentara Hampton General Hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Mahan Street, Suffolk.

Survivors include her husband, Solan M. Edwards; a daughter, Dr. Melinda J. Boone, and husband, Reginald, of Suffolk; two granddaughters, Regina and Alyssa; two sisters, Kathleen Bowser, and her husband, Glen, of Halifax, N.C.; and Vivian P. Pruden, and her husband, James, of Suffolk; one brother, Harvey Hicks of New York; two aunts, Elizabeth Boddie of Tyler, N.C.; and Vivian Cuffee of Portsmouth; sister-in-law, Eunice Green of Smithfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in First Baptist Church, Mahan Street, Suffolk by the Rev. Steven G. Blunt. The burial will be held at Meadowbrook Memorial Garden.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Hoffler Home for Adults, C/o First Baptist Church, 112 Mahan St., Suffolk, Va. 23434.

The family will be at the home of Reginald and Melinda Boone, 2704 Burning Tree Lane, (Point Harbor subdivision) Suffolk.
