Riddick’s Folly is not only a museum, but a showcase for many forms of artisans and their art, and the Folly’s Director, Robin Rountree, announced recently that a &uot;Faux Finish Workshop&uot; will take place at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 16th.

Suzanne Marion Collins is well-known to the people who visit historic Riddick’s Folly. Her works adorn the walls, baseboards and doors of the four-story Greek revival structure, providing visitors to the Folly with a glimpse of how the home looked back when it was first constructed in 1837.

&uot;We really hope that people will take this opportunity to learn from one of the premier faux finish artists in Hampton Roads,&uot; said Rountree. &uot;Suzanne will also give a brief history of faux finish followed by a demonstration of the faux finish technique. She will also teach you how to replicate this technique on a project that you can take home with you.&uot; Rountree also noted that this special workshop is free, but space is limited.

&uot;We do require reservations,&uot; she said. &uot;We ask that they call Riddick’s Folly at 934-1390 to insure a spot in this class that is made possible by a grant from the Suffolk Fine Arts Commission.&uot;

On March 29, they will hold the Folly Ball at Cedar Point Club. Tickets are $50 per person, and music will be provided by &uot;FAB,&uot; formerly known as the Fat Ammons Band.

In April, &uot;The Siege of Suffolk&uot; will be the featured event at the Folly. Visitors will see a re-enactment of a Union siege and life at the Folly during that historic time. In May, &uot;Southern Hospitality&uot; will teach young ladies and gentlemen how to act according to traditional Southern manners.

In June, look for a &uot;Theorem Painting Workshop,&uot; where Patricia Foran will instruct a class on theorem painting. This event also requires reservations. &uot;Silhouettes&uot; of children will be drawn by artisans on Aug. 17th in a special &uot;by appointment only&uot; event at the Folly.

In October, a fundraiser will provide people with an opportunity to have their flea market discoveries and family heirlooms appraised when the Folly hosts &uot;Hidden Treasures.&uot; This event was featured in Oct. 2002 and many people came to the Folly’s version of &uot;The Antiques Roadshow.&uot;

During the Christmas holidays, there will be programs in conjunction with the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society, and those dates and events will be noted in the pages of the News-Herald.
