Natalie Shaffer Duman passed away peacefully on March 6, 2003, after a courageous bout with cancer. She was born in Boston Mass., March 21, 1931, to Israel and Dora Shaffer.

She dedicated her life raising and loving five children. She later pursued a professional career that culminated at the Eastern Virginia Medical School, where she retired as Director of Material Management in 1996 after 22 years service. She was respected and admired by her co-workers and peers.

&uot;Nettie&uot; gave unselfishly of her time and love; she was the consummate volunteer. She volunteered many hours with the Norfolk Sentara Hospice Program, Maryview Crisis Center, Portsmouth Meals on Wheels, Mack Benn Volunteer Reading Program and Jewish Family Services, where she was selected as Volunteer of the Year. She was also a regular blood donor with the American Red Cross.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Melvin A. (Mike) Duman, and children, Michael Duman and wife Fran of Suffolk; Leslie Duman and wife Marilyn of Pleasanton, Calif.; Neil Duman of Richmond; Rhonda Jones and husband Doug of Suffolk; and Rebecca Duman of Portsmouth.

She also leaves behind to cherish her memory 10 grandchildren, Aaron Duman and wife Chrisi, Jonathan Duman, David and Noah Duman, Danielle and Nicole Duman, Justin and Morgan Jones, Tony Duman and Trey Freeman. She also leaves behind a great granddaughter, Abigail Duman.

She was predeceased by her brother Marty Shaffer and will be greatly missed by her two adoring sisters, Honey Polner and Harriet Archer, both of Boston, Mass., as well as many relatives, friends and associates.

Nettie was a strong, compassionate woman who was dedicated to her family, her profession, and to the betterment of humanity. She was a true example of understanding and unselfishness. She was a positive influence on every life she touched.

Friends may join the family at Harrell & Hill Funeral Home for a gathering from 2-4 p.m. Sunday and for a memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday by Dr. Israel Zoberman. The burial will be private.
