The Lakeland varsity softball team exploded for nine runs in the last two innings in a 9-3 scrimmage victory over host Smithfield on Friday afternoon. After the Lady Cavaliers scattered only a few hits over the first five innings, Ashley Schleeper drove Katelyn Smither in the sixth, and Tanya Chirico batted home Ashley McCord to tie the score at 2-2. A single by Lindsay Keely brought in Schleeper and Candace Judkins, and the Lady Cavaliers were up, 4-2. The Lady Packers cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, but Smither, McCord, Schleeper, Chirico and Whitney James scored to ice the game in the seventh. The Lady Cavaliers open their season Wednesday at home against Churchland. In baseball competition, Robert Hedrick (above) pitched two scoreless innings and scored a run as the Cavaliers tied Smithfield, 3-3. J.R. Roberts and Chase Nelson also scored for the Cavaliers, who play their first game next Friday at Hickory.
