Courtesy counts in workplace

Professionalism counts for more than you can imagine. The story of Dalene and Spencer Fillhart of Joseph P. Hall in Saturday’s Q&A puts us in mind of the importance of competency in the workplace. When you are obviously new to the business world, people will understand that you don’t know everything already about your work, but they’ll correctly expect you to make a genuine effort to learn. When it comes to medicines, the need for accuracy can sometimes be a matter of life and death. But there’s more to work than just typing correctly or building a bridge that will withstand the elements. Most jobs require dealing with other people, and there’s where courtesy and even friendliness count for as much as filling a prescription error-free. This is obviously true of people like the Fillharts. Both Dalene and Spencer stated that the favorite things about their work are the customers. This is a trait that exists not only in the Fillharts, but obviously in that pharmacy’s lengthy history.Would that all businesses had a philosophy and practice of welcoming customers and not just taking their money with a surly stare.
