Sherrif announces available scholarships

Suffolk Sheriff Raleigh H. Isaacs Sr. announced Friday that through the Virginia Sheriff’s Institute, scholarships are available to students planning to major in criminal justice.
Isaacs said applications from the Virginia Sheriff’s Scholarship Program could be picked up from his office inside the Mills E. Godwin Jr. Courts Building at 150 N. Main St. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Requires for prospective applicants include that a student must major in law enforcement, however, those majoring in law only would not be considered. Students must also live in the City of Suffolk and attend a Virginia college or university.
Applications must be completely to be accepted and they must be returned to the Sheriff’s office by April 25.
The sheriff said he plans to meet with applicants to discuss any questions concerning the application policies once the forms are returned.
&uot;After the scholarship applications are received, I will attach a letter of recommendation to each application and return them to the Virginia Sheriff’s Institute for final judging,&uot; said Isaacs. &uot;Winners will be notified at the end of May and all scholarship checks will be mailed to the educational institute named on the student’s application. Each of the applicants will receive a letter from the Sheriff’s Institute as to the status of their request for scholarship funds.&uot;
Scholarship funds provided for this program are made available through the Virginia Sheriff’s Institute and the citizens and business individual memberships in the institute. Each year, Sheriff Isaacs permits one mailing from the institute to local people and businesses asking them to join the association. A portion of funds collected from Suffolk is returned in the form of the scholarship awards.
Isaacs initiated the Suffolk Sheriff’s office participation in the Virginia Sheriff’s Institute Scholarship Program in 1994. His office has been instrumental in the awarding of 22 scholarships totaling $12,000 to local students majoring in criminal justice or law enforcement.
