In games delayed twice by rain and lightning, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy defeated visiting Peninsula Catholic at baseball and softball Tuesday afternoon, with the baseball team (9-6, 3-3) coming out with a 14-3, five-inning victory and the softball team (7-5, 5-0) snaring a 8-1 win to stay unbeaten in TCIS competition. Matt Tuttle, Ryan Johnson and Adam Keeling all homered for the Saints (Keeling’s blast, a three-run shot over the left-centerfield fence, ended the game).

Johnson singled to open the second inning. He moved to second on an error and to third on a sacrifice fly by Bo Garner. James Winslow beat out a dropped third strike, at which point Johnson scored.

James scored on a single by Matt Tuttle, and Brandon Winslow smacked a line drive up the middle to score Tuttle. A bloop single by Jeff Cooper brought Brandon in, and the Saints had a 4-0 lead.

Todd Harrell scored on a passed ball in the third, and Tuttle cranked his third homer of the season over the left field fence, a two-run blast that also scored James.

The Knights pushed across three runs in the top of the fourth, and the Saints went back to work. Keeling (who struck out five) drew a walk, and Harrell bashed a triple into deep left to score him. Johnson then crushed a towering fly ball over the left field fence, upping the lead to 10-3.

Tuttle walked to open the fifth, and Brandon bunted him to second. Jack Wright took a pitch in the leg, and Cooper reached on an error to load the bases. Tuttle scored on a wild pitch, and Keeling bashed his team’s third homer to send everyone home early.

The Saints will head to Benedictine on Thursday.

In softball action, Jessica Little struck out five and five players had two hit apiece. The Lady Saints will host Norfolk Collegiate at 4:30 p.m. today.
