The summer months are fast approaching, and one way that most people cool off is participating in water activities. Therefore, the Suffolk Chapter of the American Red Cross and Wal-Mart are sponsoring Water Safety Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, in the Wal-Mart parking lot at 1200 N. Main St.

This activity will host a variety of displays and activities for the entire family.

According to Lisa Harrell of the Suffolk Chapter of the American Red Cross, with three-quarters of the earth covered by water it is only natural that people often are in or around it. Harrell also said that water recreation can be a great experience, and that there is no reason why everyone can’t enjoy water safety, regardless of age or physical condition. So, the purpose of this event is to also educate people on how powerful and dangerous water can be, even a wadding pool can present danger.

&uot;Thinking ahead and being prepared and then being alert to possible risks once you are in or around the water is all you need to keep water activity safe and fun,&uot; said Harrell.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Suffolk Fire & Rescue, and the Suffolk Police Dive Team will join the Red Cross and Wal-Mart with games, handouts, displays, demonstrations, and other fun-filled activities. Children participating in the games and activities will receive prizes donated by Dollarville and the Family Dollar Store.

You can also enjoy lunch while participating in the activities. Visit the concession table to buy a drink and hot dog for only $1 while they last.
