Group 5292’s fifth-grade junior Girl Scouts at Beech Grove United Methodist Church hosted a visit by Dr. Craig Merrell (seated front and center), a plastic surgeon at Harbourview. He spoke about his recent trip to Vietnam for Operation Smile, which is an international campaign of doctors, nurses and other volunteers who correct facial deformities such as harelips and cleft palates. Over the past eight months, the Girl Scouts have been working on their bronze award, the highest for their level of scouting. Picking Operation Smile, they have devoted 15 hours by making cards for the children and collecting items to be sent overseas. The last step will be to visit the project headquarters in Norfolk and deliver the boxes.
