Vivian P. Cuffee

Mrs. Vivian Peele Cuffee, 89, a native of Suffolk and daughter of the late Mr. And Mrs. James Fenton Peele Sr., succumbed on Saturday, May 17, 2003, in Maryview Hospital, Portsmouth.

For 41-1/2 years she was employed by the public school system of Suffolk as a teacher and counselor. She was a faithful, active and supportive member of First Baptist Church, Mahan Street since 1930. She participated in numerous activities or organizations and committees at the church including serving as a Sunday School teacher, Junior Choir director, Deaconess Board, and Lily of the Valley Club.

Other affiliations include membership in the Sharon Missionary Baptist Association and Allied Bodies, Ministers’ Wife and Widows Alliance of Tidewater, and the Portsmouth Unit, Church Women United. Also, she supported her husband, the late Rev. Charles W. Cuffee, in his pastorate of First Baptist Church Camelot in Chesapeake.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Deloatch Sparrow; a grandson, Dale Sparrow; two nieces; several cousins; goddaughters; and many friends.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, in First Baptist Church, Mahan Street, by the Rev. Steven G. Blunt. Interment will be in Carver Cemetery.

Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Crocker Funeral Home. At other times the family will receive visitors at the home of her goddaughter, Mrs. Barbara A. Gatling, 1344 Sunnybrook Terrace (Cedar Grove Acres), Chesapeake, and will assemble there at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
