O.C. Carr Honored for safety record

O.C. Carr of Suffolk, employee of the State Highway Department, was awarded a safety badge for a perfect record of no accidents to self for 11 years. He was honored in ceremonies held this morning in the Suffolk Residency office before all skilled highway workers of this district. The presentation was made by Resident Engineer W.S. Griffin, who himself has been 11 years without an accident.

Of the Suffolk District, Nansemond County has been without a loss of time for 18 months while Isle of Wight County stands second in the state with 81 months without accident to workers.

Awards this morning were made on a five, ten or better than ten year basis. Those receiving badges for ten years safety records were H.C. Carr, C.C. Price, and R.L. Rollings. These awards were made for being without accident to self, men or equipment.

Others awarded badges for records showing no accident to self or equipment are as follows: 11 years, P.H. Carter, W.S. Griffin Jr.; Five years, J. H. Brinkley, W.E. Norfleet, and B.L. Riddick.

Outstanding safety records are possessed by F.S. Ellis, and G.G. Hunnicut, 9 years without accident; L.J. Bland, and R.E. Holland, 8 years without accident; R.O. Baines and G.T. Johnson, 7 years without accident; and C.E. Jones, S.R. Nelms, H.L. Newby, J.R. Spivey, E.H. Williams, J.H. Wills, J.J. Byrd, J.L. Carr, J.H. Price, and O.L. Underwood, 6 years without an accident.

County youth enlists in Army

Edward F. Luter, RFD 8, Box 89, Suffolk, has enlisted in the United States Army for a period of three years. Sgt. Thomas A. Bobbitt of the local Army recruiting office said today.

Luter, a veteran of the Pacific theater, told Sgt. Bobbitt that his main reasons for enlisting were opportunities for good pay, travel and education. He chose assignment at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Mrs. J. Lewis Rawles named head of Lake Kilby Garden Club

Mrs. J. Lewis Rawles was elected president of the Lake Kilby Garden Club at the meeting which was held yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. James L. McLemore Jr. in Lakeview.

Mrs. B.B. Briggs presided and Mrs. A.G. Cooke, chairman of the nominating committee, brought in the slate of new officers.

Other officers elected for the coming year were: vice president, Mrs. V.G. Eberwine; treasurer, Mrs. Willard Andrews; recording secretary, Mrs. Harvey Brown; corresponding secretary, Mrs. Walter Story Jr.; chairman of exhibits, Mrs. G.B. Dixon; publicity, Mrs. Ashby Dashields.

The hostess was assisted in serving refreshments by Mrs. George Beamon and Mrs. G.B. Dixon.
