The Memorial Day holiday marks the beginning of the summer vacation season for many, and some businesses and schools will once again enjoy a day of rest, relaxation and fun activities while other businesses will operate as usual.

The Suffolk City School System will be closed Monday, May 26 and resume its regular session Tuesday.

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy was in session half a day on Friday and will resume its regular session Tuesday.

The Suffolk City offices and Clerk’s office will closed Monday, and the

trash collection will run one day behind its regular schedule next week.

The Suffolk News Herald’s business office and most major banks will closed Monday and resume its regular business hours Tuesday.

Wal-Mart will still operate at its regular time 24 hours and Belk Department Store will be open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.

All Sentry Food Mart stores will remain operating at their normal business hours.

DMV encourages all motorists traveling during the holiday to prevent needless deaths and injuries by driving defensively and wearing safety belts. Remember, if you don’t click it you could get a ticket.

Virginia roads are always busy during holiday weekends. Please drive smart, safe and sober.&uot;

Even though the Department of Motor Vehicles customer service centers will be closed on Monday, the DMV’s office in cyberspace, www.dmvnow,com, and its extra teller machines are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Customers may check the agency’s Web site to see if their local customer service center has 24-hour extra Teller service. Customers also can use DMV’s touch-tone telephone system to renew their driver’s license or vehicle registration at 1-888-337-4782.

The Virginia State Police and local policemen will be enforcing safe driving procedures through the holiday. These law enforcement procedures include tailgating, speeding, running the red light, buckling up and safety seats for children.

Always drive defensively and watch out for other vehicles on the highway.
