Peggy Hotchkiss, a Nansemond-Suffolk Academy senior and member of the NSA National Honor Society, has been selected to receive a National Honor Society scholarship sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

Ann Powell, NSA Director of College Counseling, announced the selection.

Two hundred national NHS winners were chosen this spring to receive $1,000 college scholarship.

Mrs. Powell describes Peggy as &uot;Highly motivated; self-starter, responsible; very mature.&uot; One teacher even described her as &uot;Wonder Woman!&uot;

&uot;Peggy represents the ideal student whose strength of character, responsible work ethic, intellectual capacity for analysis and problem solving, and drive and determination to succeed set her apart,&uot; said Powell. &uot;She has been a campus leader, having served as Class President for three years, and this year she is president of one of our largest and most active service clubs, Operation Smile.

As one of the top students in a competitive class, Peggy has demonstrated excellent study habits and a conscientious desire to excel.

With a steady, calm, almost unruffled demeanor, she adeptly manages any and all challenges.&uot;

High School National Honor Society chapters from across the country were eligible to nominate two seniors who are members to compete.

Nominees were selected on the basis of their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs; achievements in the arts and sciences; employment experience; and academic record.

They also were required to write an essay.

&uot;Miss Hotchkiss has demonstrated exemplary achievement in her academic work and service to her school and community,&uot; said Gerald N. Tirozzi, executive director, NASSP.

&uot;She’s a fine example of the outstanding caliber of young people in America’s high schools.&uot;

In recognizing leadership in cocurricular activities as well as academic performance, the NHS scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education.

Cocurricular activities are an essential part of the school curriculum.

While at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, Peggy has been class president 9-11; a member of the Operation Smile Club; a member of the Co-Ed Hi Y; an SCO Representative; a member of the National Honor Society; a member of the Newspaper Staff; a member of the Performance Arts Club; a varsity cheerleader; a member of the Varsity Girls Lacrosse team; and on the Prom Committee.

This fall Peggy will attend The College of William and Mary.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carter W. Hotchkiss of Franklin, Virginia.
