Reginald L. Woodruff

Reginald LeMar Woodruff Jr. graduated Saturday, May 17, from Chowan College in Murfreesboro, N.C. where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Graphic Design. While a student at Chowan, Woodruff was a member of the Chowan Singers, Encore, and CSU Gospel Choirs. He was also Vice-President of Publicity and Historian for the Campus Program Board and a member of the Dean’s List along with being chosen as Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.

Woodruff is a 1998 honor graduate of Southampton High School and is a member of O’Berry A.M.E. Zion Church in Franklin. He is also the son of Reginald L. and Candice Woodruff of Franklin and the grandson of Robert and Elizabeth Woodruff of Suffolk and both the late Inez Scott Mayes and William Kindred of Franklin.

Weaver K. Walden

Weaver K. Walden was honored for &uot;Excellence in Mathematics Teaching&uot; during an Awards Dinner sponsored by Guilford County N.C. Schools Advisory Board on May 15, at the Greensboro High Point Marriott Hotel in Greensboro, N.C.

Walden, a fourth grade teacher in Guilford County competed with seven other elementary mathematics teachers and was bestowed the highest honor for &uot;Excellence in Mathematics Teaching&uot; for the entire school system.

He was the recipient of a plaque, a certificate, and a monetary gift.

Walden is a 1993 high honor graduate of Lakeland High School and a 1997 Magna Cum Laude honor graduate of North Carolina. A&T State University, Greensboro, N.C. He is the son of Kenneth and Denise L. Walden of the Holland Borough, Suffolk and grandson of Ernestine T. Langston and the late George Weaver Langston and Inez E. Walden and the late Warrick J. Walden.

He is married to the former Stephanie Dorsette.

Sarah Laraine Jones

Kimberly Ann Morris

The King’s Fork Woman’s Club has awarded the Elizabeth Scholarships to Sarah Laraine Jones an Kimberly Ann Morris. Each student received a $500 scholarship.

Jones is an honor graduate of Lakeland High School and is the daughter of Bobby and Neresa Jones of Suffolk. While at Lakeland she has been active in the Junior Beta Club, Beta Club, and Varsity Tennis Team. She has volunteered with the Red Cross and Relay For Life as well as being active with her youth group. Her goal is to attain an undergraduate degree in biology at Christopher Newport University and to study medicine at the Medical College of Virginia in the fall.

Morris is an honor graduate of Nansemond-Suffolk academy and is the daughter of Bert and Robin Morris of Suffolk. She has been involved in Students Against Drunk Driving, The American Cancer Society Club, The Spirit Club, Art Portfolio, and JV Volleyball at the school. She has worked as a volunteer at Obici Hospital, The Relay For Life, and Bethlehem Christian Church Nursery. She has maintained membership in the Anchor Club and the Bethlehem Christian Youth Group. Morris plans to attend Old Dominion University and major in education in the fall.

Maria Panagopulos

Maria Panagopulos of Chesapeake, a senior at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy was officially presented with an engraved bronze medallion to signify her selection as a Distinguished Finalist in The 2003 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program which honors outstanding youth volunteers.

The presentation took place on Friday, May 23 during the Senior Day awards program at the school. Panagopulos was being honored for starting a student historical society that supports efforts by the Nansemond-Suffolk Historical Society to preserve historic downtown Suffolk.

All middle level and high schools in the U.S. along with all girl Scout councils, county 4-H organization, Red Cross chapters, YMCAs, Camp Fire USA councils and volunteer centers, were eligible to select a student or member for a local Prudential Spirit of Community Award last November. Local honorees were then reviewed by state-level judges, who selected two State Honorees in each state, plus a select number of Distinguished Finalists based on criteria such as personal initiative, creativity, effort, impact and personal growth.

The awards program, sponsored in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASS)) is part of a broad initiative created by Prudential Financial to encourage young people to become involved in community service.

Kearston Dillard

Kearston Dillard of Suffolk graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg. She is the daughter of Deborah Dillard.

Averett University honors

Averett University has named six Suffolk area students to its honors list for the fall semester. Names to the Dean’s List are Rosa Scott-Slaughter and Tyron Taylor with Bachelor of Business Administration degrees; named to the President’s List is Nancy H. White with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree; and named to the Vice President’s List are Wallace E. Benton, Phillip C. Bodie, and Constance Ruffin with Associate of Science degrees.

Students earning a perfect 4.0 GPA average are included in the President’s List; students earning at least a 3.75 GPA are included in the Vice President’s List; and students earning a minimum a GPA of 3.40 are named to the Dean’s List. A minimum of 12 hours of graded work for the semester is required to be considered for honors.

Alfred Gamble

Alfred Gamble, son of

Dorothy Bland Gamble, is the recipient of the Lewis F. Morris/Chuckatuck High School Scholarship for 2003. Gamble is a senior at Nansemond River High School.

He plans to attend Virginia Tech where he will major in business.

The Lewis F. Morris/Chuckatuck High School Scholarship is named for Mr. Morris who was principal of Chuckatuck High School from 1952-1965.

The scholarship also honors all of those who attend or attended

Chuckatuck High School.
