Asks Supreme Court for Rosenberg stay

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Supreme Court, which three times has refused to review the case of the condemned atom spies, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, today was asked to stay their execution.

The couple has been sentenced to die in the Sing Sing Prison’s electric chair Thursday night for conspiring to pass U.S. atomic secrets to Russia. By grim coincidence, Thursday will be their 14th wedding anniversary.

Attorneys seeking to save them had a 45-minute audience with Justice Jackson in his chambers and he then decided to refer their appeal to the full court at its regular Saturday conference appearance.

Tom Warrington elected DAV state president

Virginia’s Disabled American Veterans elected Thomas Warrington of Suffolk today as their new president. Warrington succeeds John F. White of Roanoke.

Woodward, Berwyn gives Stanley backing

The local Stanley-for Governor headquarters has issued endorsements of their candidate by Mayor Richard L. Woodward Jr. and Vernon G. Eberwine, chairman of the Nansemond Country Board of Supervisors.

Eberwine, in part, said, &uot;I have known Thomas B. Stanley for a number of years and have had a long respected his judgment as a successful business man. I know he is admirably equipped to give Virginia a highly successful administration as governor.&uot;

Howell speaker at auxiliary meet

Gibson Howell, administrator of Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, was the guest speaker at the meeting of the Board of Directors of the Women’s Auxiliary of the hospital Thursday afternoon.

Mr. Howell’s topic was the &uot;Duties of the Patient Welfare Committee and Public Relations Concerning the Hospital.&uot;

Mrs. Whitney Godwin, newly elected president, presided over the business portion of the meeting.

Baptists hear Mrs. Harrell

&uot;The Values in Christian Education,&uot; was the topic of the program given by Mrs. D.L. Harrell, at a dinner meeting held recently by the Harriet King Business Women’s Circle of the First Baptist Church.

The dinner was held at the home of Mrs. A.M. Hundley on North Street with Miss Nell Council as co-hostess. Mrs. Lois Canada assisted the hostesses with serving.
