The Pinochle Bugs Civic and Social Club of Suffolk celebrated its Founder’s Day with other Hampton Road Chapters from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday, June 21, in The Dining Room.

According to Elaine Estes, Suffolk Chapter president, during that time the clubs wanted to come together socially to enjoy playing pinochle for fun and relaxation and to enjoy a delicious lunch.

The Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Newport News chapters participated; the Hampton Chapter was absent from the event.

&uot;We always welcome women of similar interest to join us,&uot; said Estes. &uot;We are a club who gives back to the community and have contributed to Meals on Wheels, Rescue Squad, Red Cross and Joy Fund.&uot;

The Pinochle Bugs Civic and Social Club Suffolk Chapter was organized in 1955 to cultivate social relations among women of similar interests and ideals and to foster interests in social, economic, educational, cultural, and civic conditions of the communities in which chapters are located.

There are nine members in the Suffolk Chapter. Officers and members are as follows: Elaine Estes, president; Mildred Creekmur, vice president; Juanita Barnes, recording secretary; Violene O. Sharpe, corresponding secretary; Doris Logan, financial secretary; Elizabeth Bernard, treasurer; Margaret Locust, scorekeeper; Flora Chase, chaplain; and Grace Lancaster, member.

There are 22 chapters in seven states and the District of Columbia. The most recent group from Atlanta, Ga. was inducted at an annual conclave that was held in Pittsburgh, Pa. in April.

The national chapter is a life member of the NAACP and gives a scholarship annually to some deserving students who wish to further their education.

At the year assembly the national chapter also gives a $2,000 contribution to a civic or charitable organization designed by the host chapter.

The next conclave will be held in Greensboro, N.C. in April 2004.
