Churchill ready to assist U.S. against Japan

Aug. LONDON (AP) -Describing Adolph Hitler as a surprised, startled and staggered at the bloody cost of the German invasion of Russia, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, declared in a broadcast last night that Britain would join the United States in action against Japan, the Asiatic Axis partner, if the Japanese persisted in aggression.

In the speech, his first public utterance since the historic conference with President Roosevelt in the Atlantic two weeks ago, it was implied that German was too involved upon the great plains of Russia to turn now to another sphere of war. Churchill estimated that million and a half perhaps two million&uot; German had fallen in the nine week campaign and said invaders were retaliating with scores of thousands of executions&uot; of Russian patriots.

New City Council to meet Monday

Despite the fact that the next Monday is Labor Day – and a holiday – Suffolk ‘s new City Council will follow the city code to the letter and meets for its biennial reorganization.

City Clerk6 Charles L. Hutchins said this morning that he will call a meeting for 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1 as provided by law. L.H. Cathey and William F. Whitley, councilmen elected in June, officially assume their posts on Suffolk’s five-man governing body Sept. 1. They will join Bayard O. Hill, Emmett H. Rawles and Philip E. Eve on the council.

Suffolk man killed by car is 6th fatality in 5 days

John Cross, 38, of Suffolk,, who was killed when struck by an automobile at 11:45 p.m. Saturday night near Elephant’s Fork, was the sixth person to be killed in highway accidents in this area in five days.

Cross was killed when he was attempting to cross the highway by an automobile being driven by Bernard Lee of Petersburg, according to officers. Lee was arrested and booked on a charge of manslaughter involuntary

Suffolkians touring Canada feel tension of war nerves

Suffolkians, vacationing in Canada, observe and feel the tension of war. Mrs. Jacobs, Mrs. J.A. Cheatum, Mrs. Clarence Booker and Miss Louise Kendrick have just returned from a tour of the New England states and Canada. Mrs. Jacobs commented on the fact that so few automobiles were in use and the only the few only for commercial purposes. Everyone

was riding bicycles. In fact, the highway was crowded with them, Coach Al Hawkins puts Suffolk through High Raiders through opening practice

Not letting other Class B schools get the jump on them, the Suffolk High School Raiders football squad started practice at Peanut park this afternoon under Head Monitor Al Hawkins and Assistant Coach Howard Hollingsworth.

Knowing just what can be expected from the Maury Commodores, the opening game foes her Friday Sept 12, Coach Hawkins will lose no time in getting the Raiders ready for their strongest opponents of the campaign Lost from last year’s back field is John Thanos, the little fast shifty back who played a prominent part in the Raiders’ drive that gave them nine wins and a tie last year.
