Lynsey Daughtrey had three assists and a goal and Kelly Askew had one of each as the host Lakeland junior varsity team roared to a 5-0 shutout over Tabb in the opening day of the Lakeland Invitational Junior Varsity Tournament on Friday. The young Lady Cavaliers kept the ball in Tabb territory for virtually the entire game, giving Lakeland goalkeeper Brittany Vick an easy day with a 19-0 shooting advantage.

After Lakeland misfired on its first four shots, Stephanie Setzer took the ball to the right side of the Tabb circle, and knocked a pass across the center to Askew, who tipped in the goal with 12:30 left. Lakeland didn’t waste time increasing its advantage, as Daughtrey took the ball back down the field, got entangled in a mess of defenders, and knocked a pass back out to Ashby Stancill, who scored at the 11-minute mark.

The &uot;Cavalierettes&uot; continued to cross up the &uot;Tigerettes&uot; with their fine passing ability, but were unable to score for the remainder of the half. Three minutes into the second period, however, a ball rolled out of a mess of players in front of the Tabb goal to Askew on the left side of the cage.

Askew shot, but the ball appeared headed out of bounds on the right side. Just before it crossed the line, however, Daughtrey charged forward, reached her stick out with one hand, and tipped in the score.

Kaitlin Espinosa scored her first goal of the game on an assist from Daughtrey with 10 minutes to go, and Lindsay Cutchins completed a complex configuration of passes on Lakeland’s final score, which came seven minutes later. From the right side of the Tabb net, Courtney Parameter knocked a pass across the circle to Daughtrey, who received the ball at the left side of the circle, near the outer edge. She darted forward, and pulled up just before reaching the pole. Seeing Cutchins on the other side, Daughtrey fed her the ball to complete the 5-0 victory.

Lakeland returns to action today, battling Lafayette at 11 a.m. and Maury at 1 p.m. Nansemond River will square off with Churchland at 10 .m. and Jamestown at noon.
