After its host team suffered through its worst defeat of the season on Friday night, a 28-0 loss to St. Anne’s Belfield, the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy football field might have been feeling a little sad. Luckily, a younger group of Saints showed up on Saturday morning to make the chalky grass shine as green as ever.

Dominique Patterson rushed for two touchdowns and Daryl Ricks on as the Nansemond-Suffolk Pee-Wee Pop Warner football team defeated the Inner-City Steelers (IC), while C.J. White and Bobby Lamm scored as the Junior Pee-Wee squad also record a shutout over IC, winning 13-0.

Patterson set the tone for the game on the second play, when he blasted around the right side for a 50-yard touchdown run. &uot;That got everybody hyped up,&uot; said the John F. Kennedy Middle School student. &uot;I saw an open field, and three guys were coming toward me, so I just outsped them.&uot; He also scored the first extra point.

Later in the first half, Patterson found a way through a hole in the middle of the line, and darted through it for a 13-yard score. &uot;Will Crenshaw and John White gave me a big hole, and then I only had one or two people to beat.&uot;

Crenshaw scored the team’s second extra point. &uot;I like the feeling of hitting people and knocking them over, getting them out of the play,&uot; he said.

With only a few minutes remaining, the Saints were faced with a third-and-goal from the Steeler 15. Hunt Odom took the snap and handed off to Ricks, who repeated Patterson’s earlier pattern by sweeping the right side for the score. Dion Quick lived up to his name on the extra point, charging away from the Steeler defense to catch Odom’s pass for the final score.
