Former Warrior nabs two ‘Player of the Week’ honors

Averett University defensive back Anthony Morris, a 2001 graduate of Nansemond River High School, was named this week’s USA South Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as well as National Quad-Defensive Player of the Week by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette, it was announced Tuesday.

Morris made three tackles, broke up three passes, and intercepted a pair of passes in Averett’s 21-14 win over Methodist Saturday. In fact, he returned one of those interceptions 80 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, which lifted Averett to a 21-14 victory. Morris also blocked a Methodist field goal attempt in the fourth quarter.

Morris ranks fifth on the team with 25 tackles this season, which includes three tackles for a loss and a quarterback sack.

He has also scored two career touchdowns.

Morris shares the national honor with Thom Hausler from Capital University, Jarrod Smith from Trinity (TX) University, and Dustin Westafer from Anderson (IN) University.
