The Rev. Linwood T. Daughtrey, pastor of New Calvary Baptist Church on Beech Street, will retire from the ministry after 28 years of service. To commemorate this event, the Rev. Stephen Blunt, pastor at First Baptist Mahan Street and his congregation, will be in charge of a special service at 4 p.m. Sunday in New Calvary.

Daughtery has held membership in First Baptist Church, Mahan Street, for over 50 years.

Daughtrey was licensed and ordained by the Rev. Isaac E. Williams, pastor emeritus of First Baptist Mahan. He went to New Calvary Baptist on Oct. 18, 1998, following the Rev. Melvin A. Boone, and served as interim pastor. He was elected to serve as pastor of Calvary in October 1999.

Daughtrey attended Suffolk Public Schools and graduated from the former East Suffolk High School in 1956. He then attended Virginia State University in Petersburg and Norfolk State University in Norfolk.

He holds a B.A. degree in political science and an M.A. degree in religious studies from the Virginia University of Lynchburg in Lynchburg.

He is a former public school teacher at Georgia Tyler High School in Windsor and Lake Taylor Senior High School and Maury High School in Norfolk.

After some encouragement from the late president of Norfolk State, Dr. Lyman Beacher Brooks, he entered the university campus ministry and served 10 years at Norfolk State, and six years at Old Dominion University. He retired from the campus ministry in 1993.

Daughtrey has enjoyed an active ministry and has served as assistant pastor at New Cathedral Baptist Church and education minister at Bethel Baptist Church, both located in Norfolk. In Windsor, he served over three years at Chapel Grove UCC as an assistant to the Rev. J.J. Ferguson, pastor. He also works and volunteers with a series of religious and civic organizations.

His pastorate position has brought on many accomplishments: the Christian Education Program, the burning of the church mortgage, a new roof and a parking lot.

From 1994-1998 he worked with Suffolk Senior Services program on N. Main St. and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, Epsilon Iota Lambda Chapter, Cardinal Civic Club of Norfolk, Eastern District of University Chaplains, The Suffolk Ministerial Alliance and other religious organizations.

His guiding thought is, &uot;If I can help somebody as I pass along, then my living shall not have been in vain.

Daughtrey said that he thanks his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for a great 28 years but now looks forward to a great deal of foreign and domestic travel.
