Man charged in Sunday homicide

A man wanted for questioning in a weekend homicide turned himself in to the magistrate’s office at 8:15 a.m. Monday. As yesterday afternoon, police were still questioning Kelly Lashea Hale about the shooting death early Sunday morning.

Hale, 26, a man known to frequent the Saratoga area of the city, is accused of shooting Jonathan Avela Williams, a 49-year-old resident of the Chimney Hill area of Virginia Beach. Police said the bullet struck Williams in the upper torso. He was transported to Obici Hospital where he died at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday.

Police issued warrants for Hale’s arrest following the shooting that took place as the victim attended a party in the 2300 block of Nansemond Parkway. There were approximately 15 people, including a small child, present when the shooting occurred, and witnesses told police that the men had been involved in an argument. Williams was a friend of the suspect’s mother.

Williams is best remembered by those who knew him as the 2002 Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge No. 206.

Hale has been charged with murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Detectives P.L. Sessoms and C.M. Gonzalez are investigating.
