A recent Nansemond River High School graduate was shot to death in Newport News Saturday night by a teenager to whom she had provided transportation, said police investigators in that city.

Rachel Nicole Jordan, 18, was shot in the back when a handgun carried by her 17-year-old passenger discharged as he was getting out of the back seat of her 1997 Kia Sportage, said police. Jordan, who grew up on Crittenden Road, had apparently gone to Newport News to drop the suspect off at a residence on Elizabeth Court.

Doctors at Riverside Hospital in Newport News pronounced Jordan dead at 10:07 p.m. Saturday.

Newport News detectives have charged the teen suspect with involuntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a minor. He is being held in juvenile detention until his court date comes up.
