People await the Thanksgiving holiday with the anticipation of spending quality time with family and friends.

The following schools and businesses will observe the holiday and some with changing schedules.

Suffolk Public Schools and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy personnel and students will have early dismissals today and will return to school Monday.

The Suffolk News-Herald’s business office will be closed Thursday but will produce a paper for that day. The newspaper will resume its normal operation hours Friday.

Suffolk City offices will operate a half-day today and reopen Monday. The City of Suffolk Public Works Department will make its Thursday’s trash collection on Friday and its Friday pickup on Saturday. The department is asking you to have your trash at curbside no later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection.

Wal-Mart will remain open at its normal hours on Thanksgiving Day; Belk will be closed, but re-open from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. Friday. Food Lion grocery stores will close at 3 p. m. and Farm Fresh will close at 4 p.m. Thursday. Both will resume their normal operating hours Friday.

All Southern Food and Sentry Food Mart stores will operate at their normal hours during the Thanksgiving holiday. Use your telephone directory for locations and telephone numbers.

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will close at noon today and remain closed all day Thursday and Friday. However, DMV Customer Service Centers will re-open Saturday.

According to DMV Commissioner D.B. Smit, since in this month Saturday is not only the last day of the month but usually the busiest one of the month, you can anticipate longer than usual waits for service.

&uot;After a two and-a-half day holiday, we expect to be extremely busy,&uot; he said.
