Smile: For the Nansemond River Garden Club for building a scatter garden at Cedar Hill Cemetery so Suffolk residents can continue to utilize the historic cemetery for disposal of remains. The scatter garden provides a place for cremation remains to be scattered.

Smile: For Erin B. Rice, a graduate of Nansemond River High School, recipient of the Suffolk Woman’s Club 2005 scholarship.

Scowl: For the fact that only 30 people showed up for a public meeting to discuss the possible direct election of the mayor in Suffolk.

Smile: For Christina Maupin, who spent time at Children’s Hospital for the King’s Daughters following a Sept. 15, 2004 car accident, for helping CHKD raise a record $3.6 million during its annual telethon.

Smile: For generous Suffolkians who have donated $80,000 through the American Red Cross for tsunami relief. Oakland Christian Church made a $10,147 donation, the largest one to date.

Smile: For organizers and participants in the Poker Run bike rally, which raised money locally for the Special Olympics.
