It might not be too difficult to block the Nansemond River girls’ basketball team’s shots this season. That is, if opposing teams can catch them.

&uot;We might not be tall, but I bet we can beat everyone up the court,&uot; said Danielle Williams. &uot;As much as we run in practice, we have to be fast, because we’re pretty short.&uot; The Lady Warriors’ tallest players are about 5’9&uot;.

&uot;Where you lack in one area, you make up for it in another,&uot; said Courtney Greathouse. &uot;It’s my last year, so I have to make the best of it. When you’re in your last year, everyone’s always looking up to you.&uot; In the Lady Warriors’ case, it’s usually in the literal sense.

&uot;I don’t think that being a senior has much to do with responsibility,&uot; Williams said. &uot;We’ll all have to work hard.&uot;

Last season, Stephanie Adams showed why her teammates gifted her with the nickname &uot;Too Smooth,&uot; setting a school record with seven three-pointers in one game. This season, she intends to break it. &uot;We’re a young team,&uot; admits Adams. &uot;As soon as we get everyone used to playing with each other, we’ll be fine.&uot;

The Lady Warriors have a new weapon this season; coach Allan Harris, an assistant coach on the Perquimans High School team of Hertford, N.C. that made it to the state finals last season. &uot;I’m going to keep a lot of the same concepts, but with a little more emotional adjustment,&uot; Harris said. &uot;My program is based around hard work, intensity, making sure the girls understand the program, setting goals, and attaining them. They should always give 110 percent effort out there.&uot;
