Michael Miller broke two records and Brandon Wilder one as the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy boys defeated visiting Greenbrier Christian 66-21 Thursday at the Suffolk YMCA. Miller, a junior, cut .3 seconds off Justin Pyle’s 1998-9 time of 25.83 in the 50-meter freestyle, and finished at 59.11 in the 100-meter freestyle, slipping past Rob Simpson’s 2000-1 time of 59.59. Freshman Wilder is the school’s new 200 individual medley champ, as his time of 2:27.64 cut nearly half a second off Pyle’s 1998-9 time of 2:28.05.

&uot;I’ve broken several records, but this is meaningful because it’s a school record. It’s something that they leave there for a while,&uot; said Miller, who also holds the school record in the 100-meter breastroke. &uot;Even if you just get a little bit of confidence from a win like this, you can still carry it into your next meet.&uot;

Wilder hopes to pass his own record soon. &uot;It was pretty sweet, and I have to get faster and faster,&uot; he said. Though Wilder is a member of the record-holding 400-freestyle and 200-medley relay teams (Miller is a member of the 200-meter squad), Thursday marked his first individual accomplishment. &uot;I think I’ll break it again.&uot; He also won the 100-fly, finishing with a time of 1:06.76.

The boys team finished first in every race in the meet. Joe Lewinski took the 200- and 500-freestyle, and Joe Direnzo won the 100-breastroke. Ryan Hanson won the 100-backstroke, and he, Lewinski, Miller and Aaron Schaubach teamed to win the 400-freestyle relay. Schaubach, DiRenzo, Philip Brooks (the squad’s only male eighth-grader) and Sean Tennant won the 200-medley relay, and Brooks, DiRenzo, Schaubach and Wilder won the 200-freestyle relay.

The Lady Saints were even more domineering in their 80-9 victory, taking first and second place in every race. Tess Smith took the 200-freestyle and 100-fly, and Britney Bishop won the 50- and 100-freestyle. Anna Cotton won the 200-individual medley and 100-breastroke, and Jade Bishop and Sarah D’Haem won the 100-backstroke and 500-freestyle.

&uot;I think things went as smooth as possible, but I’m still working toward my best times,&uot; said Britney, whose time of 1:07.53 fell just over three seconds over the school record she set as a freshman. &uot;I want to get below 24 seconds in the 50-freestyle.&uot; She came in with a time of 29.70 in the individual race, and teamed with Nikki Moore, Amber Mosal and Tiffany Buckley to win the 200-freestyle relay race in 2:10.02.

Jade, Cotton, Buckley and Smith teamed to take the 200-medley relay, and Buckley, Moore, Kelly Ruland and Maggie Standing won the 400-freestle relay.

&uot;It’s good that we had this meet for experience,&uot; Britney said. &uot;I think it will get our hopes up in the future.&uot; The team’s next home meet is scheduled for Jan. 16.
