A repeat performance will take place the following week. City offices will close at noon Dec. 31 and reopen for business Jan. 5.

Suffolk students began celebrating the holiday this past Friday, when Suffolk Public Schools and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy closed for winter break. Classes will resume Jan. 5.

The city’s public works department will follow its usual schedule for pickups made on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the next two weeks.

Trash collections usually made on Thursday and Friday will be delayed by one day. The department is asking people to have their trash at the curbside no later than 7 a.m. on the days of collection.

The holidays will impact most businesses’ operating hours.

Both of the downtown’s two major retailers, Wal-Mart and Belk Department Store, will close at 6 p.m. Dec. 24 and remain closed until Dec. 26.

Wal-Mart’s normal operating hours will resume when the store reopens Dec. 26.

Two of the city’s primary grocers, Food Lion and Farm Fresh, will close at 6 p.m. Dec. 24 and will remain closed through Christmas Day. Both will reopen to normal operating hours on Dec. 26.

The Suffolk News Herald will not publish on Christmas Day and the business office will closed. Normal hours will resume Friday.
