The Epsilon Iota Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Fraternity Inc. awards its 2003 Boone Turner Scholarships.

The recipients are Rachel E. Claiborne and Jonathan L. Roberts. Each gets $500.

Claiborne, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Claiborne Jr. of Franklin, is a first-year student at Virginia State University, Petersburg. She is a psychology major with an emphasis in child psychology.

Roberts, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Roberts of Suffolk, is a first-year student at Norfolk State University. He is majoring in electronics engineering, and his career path will lead to become a computer software engineer.

In keeping with the fraternity’s motto – to promote scholarship and exercise love for all mankind – the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity awards its annual scholarships in honor of two of its dedicated members, the late William Boone and William L. Turner.

The Alpha Phi Fraternity was founded on Dec. 4, 1906 at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. This organization is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for blacks and people of others around the world.
