Chances are that if you visited the City of Suffolk offices on Friday, you were surprised to see that they were closed in observance of the Lee-Jackson Holiday. However, schools, banks and most other businesses continued normal working hours as usual. But on Monday, Jan 19 in observance of the Martin Luther King Holiday, banks and all schools, including Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, will be closed.

The City of Suffolk offices will also remain closed, but resume regular operating hours on Tuesday.

Trash collection regularly scheduled for Friday will take place today and run one day behind schedule during next week. The department is asking you to have your trash at curbside no later than 7 a.m. on the days of collection.

Post offices will be closed Monday and delivery of mail is limited to Express Mail in the major metropolitan areas. As an option, customers can obtain postage where they see the &uot;Buy Stamps Here&uot; signage at ATMs, supermarkets and drug stores. Customers can also visit the Postal Service at www.usps.com to order stamps and to look up ZIP codes, calculate postage, and get details on mailing options and special services.

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) was closed Friday in observance of the Lee-Jackson Holiday and will remain closed Monday.

DMV offers three self-service options that are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week – mail: Internet (www.dmvnow.com) and telephone (1-888-337-4782.) Customers can find out if they are eligible to use self-service methods by checking their renewal notices.

DMV also want to remind customers that Virginia’s new legal presence law is now in effect. This law requires customers applying for a photo ID card, learner’s permit or driver’s license to show:

nTwo proofs of identity

nProof of legal presence (effective Jan. 1, 2004)

zrenewing or reinstating their driving privilege.

Legal presence may be proved using documents such as a U.S. birth certificate or a valid or expired U.S. passport. It also can be proved using a variety of other documents, such as a Certificate of Citizenship, Resident Alien Card or a valid foreign passport with a visa, 1-94 or I-94W from a participating country.

The Suffolk News-Herald, Wal-Mart, Belk Department Store, Food Lion and Farm Fresh supermarkets will operate at their normal hours Monday.
