It was perfect at first – a white Play Dough that was easily molded into rotund snowmen and snowballs.

But two nights of freezing rain has turned Sunday’s snowfall into an icy mess that will continue to make travel treacherous for Suffolk residents today.

&uot;Tomorrow morning’s drive time looks to be just as much a challenge as today was,&uot; Capt. Jim Judkins, the city’s emergency services coordinator, said late Monday. &uot;We are probably looking at the same road conditions tomorrow that we saw this morning.&uot;

The National Weather Service’s winter weather advisory was lifted at 5 a.m. this morning, Judkins said.

Two to three inches of snow blanketed Suffolk Sunday afternoon before changing over to freezing rain around 11 p.m., Judkins said.

Temperatures hovered in the low-30s on Monday, with occasional freezing rain that changed into sleet and rain, Judkins said. The National Weather Service was calling for a 1/4-inch of ice accumulation Monday night, he said.

With temperatures expected to inch into the low 40s today, any remaining ice and slush should melt, Judkins said.

As of mid-afternoon Monday, Dominion Power was reporting that only 29 Suffolk households were without power, Judkins said.
