In honor of Black History Month, the Suffolk Visitor Center is displaying a historical series of figurines sculpted by Martha Holcombe-Root throughout the month.

The figurines depict prominent blacks who helped shape this country, include Harriet Tubman, leader of the Underground Railroad, and Pvt. Augustus Walley, one of the nation’s first Medal of Honor recipients.

Other historic individuals featured include Sojourner Truth, a devoted abolitionist, preacher and lecturer, and Frederick Douglass, who devoted his life to the abolition of slavery and to the struggle of human rights. Others represented include George Washington Carver, Mary Bethune and Ida B. Wells.

Also in honor of Black History Month, Tap Team Two & Company will reveal their contemporary perspective on tap dance as an American art form during a free performance at the Birdsong Recreation Center at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 10.
