Riddick runs

Moses A. Riddick Jr., candidate for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor, was the target of a verbal attack Thursday by the Virginia General Assembly’s only black legislator.

Richmond-Henrico Del. W. Ferguson Reid labeled Moses A. Riddick of Nansemond County a &uot;loser&uot; and called his candidacy a &uot; joke and trick&uot; to deceive the state’s black voters.

Mrs. Cuthbert president of book club

Mrs. J.L. Cuthbert is the new president of the Suffolk Book Club for the 1969-70 club year.

She succeeds Mrs. A. Taylor Darden.

Other officers elected were Mrs. B.L. Trump, vice president; Mrs. John Robert Johnson, secretary; Mrs. W.T. Pond, treasurer; and Mrs. G. Richardson Joyner Jr., librarian.

Meeting at the home of Mrs. G. Richardson Joyner Jr., the group heard a talk on the historical homes and buildings in Suffolk given by Mrs. Marian Watson, a member of the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society.

County youth to aid Battle

William C. Battle has named two third-year law students, one a native of Nansemond County, to serve as co-chairmen of students and young persons for Battle in his campaign for governor.

Leslie D. Smith Jr. of Chuckatuck, a student at Washington and Lee University, and Angus King Jr. of Alexandria, a student in the University of Virginia’s law school, will head of Battle Youth Corps.

James E. Parker on U.S. Savings & Loan League

James E. Parker, First Federal Savings and Loan Association, Suffolk, has been appointed to the 1969 Investments and Mortgage Lending Committee of the United States Savings and Loan League.

Raiders win 4-way meet

Superb efforts by Jimmy Blanchard, who tied the District 1 record of 15.2 in the high hurdles, and Danny Lawrence, who won duels with highly rated opponents in two distance runs, helped carry Suffolk High’s unbeaten trackmen to a slim one-point victory in a quadrangular meeting here yesterday with Poquoson, Forest Glen and John Yeates.

Danny Lawrence, Suffolk’s freshman standout, withstood challenges from two of the area’s better distance runners and captured both the mile and the 880.

Rufus Creekmore from John Yeates, also a freshman, was a strong threat to hand Lawrence his first defeat of the season in the mile.
