Sarah H. Baker

Mrs. Sarah H. Baker, 8261 Gates Road, Suffolk, entered into eternal rest Sunday, April 25, 2004 at Southampton Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

She was the daughter of the late Zachariah T. and Geneva Howell. She was predeceased by her husband Samuel Moses Baker of more than 50 years, a son Samuel M. Baker Jr. and a grandson Michael D. Baker.

She was a member of Corinth Chapel United Church of Christ where she served as a Bible teacher, president of the Missionary Circle and was church financial secretary for more than 40 years. She was a homemaker, self-employed seamtress. She served the public schools as a bus driver and later retired from Obici Hospital as a food service worker. During her later years she was an Avon representative and a member of The Avon Presidents Club.

She was a devoted member of The Order of Eastern Star Holland Chapter No. 162. She leaves to cherish her memory, one sister, Mrs. Dorethea Wiggins of Suffolk; five sons, Herman L. Baker Sr., of Atlanta, Ga.; the Rev. L.T. Baker (Ellen) of Charleston, S.C.; The Rev. Henry G. Baker (Lucy) of Suffolk; the Rev. S. Allison Baker of Columbia, S.C.; Jeffery Baker (Angela) of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; three daughters, Mrs. Shirley Baker Harris (John) of Neptune, N.J.; the Rev.C. Vernell Baker Brown (Richard) of Philadelphia, Pa.; Mrs. Maurita Y. Baker Hill (Cornelius) of Richmond; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

The funeral will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 29 at The Corinth Chapel United Church of Christ. Pastor Millard F. Boone will officiate and the Rev. J.J. Ferguson will deliver the eulogy. Services have been entrusted to the care of Peebles Mortuary.

The family will receive friends at the residence.
