Norfolk Academy scored two runs in the top of the eighth to escape with a 4-2 victory over host Nansemond-Suffolk Academy on Wednesday afternoon. Jason Rock struck out three in the last four innings, but gave up all four runs in the loss.

A lack of clutch hitting hurt the Saints early on, as NSA had a man on third with one out or less in the first two innings, but were unable to scored. Adam Keeling, who struck out four in the first four innings, walked in the fourth, and Ryan Johnson drove him in with a single, but the Bulldogs scored two runs in the sixth to go ahead.

Todd Harrell led off the bottom of the inning, and Keeling walked. Rock struck out, but a fielder’s choice by Johnson moved Harrell to third, and he scored on a wild pitch. But NA pushed across the deciding runs in the first extra inning, and the Saints were unable to bounce back. They are their softball counterparts will host Hampton Roads Academy today.

Lakeland was swept by visiting Hickory, as the baseball team fell 3-1 and the softball team 7-1. Bucky Buchanan singled home Bryan Ashburn to tie the score at 1-1 in the second inning, but the Hawks scored in the third and sixth, and the Cavaliers could only paw out three hits the rest of the way. Erica Rimasse drove in Whitney James for the sole score in softball. The Lady Cavaliers will try for their second defeat of Oscar Smith of the season today, while the boys try to recover from an earlier loss to the Tigers.

The Nansemond River softball team was the only bright spot on Suffolk diamonds Wednesday, as the Lady Warriors scored four runs in the second inning on their way to an 11-3 defeat of Oscar Smith. Lindly Theroux struck out eight and allowed just two hits, and Heather Horton hit a homer and a double for two RBIs. The Lady Warriors will visit Western Branch on Friday.
