Fire destroys home

Suffolk Firefighters were unable to save a vacant house from burning, but they kept flames contained to the structure even though the area around the house was covered with brush.

Suffolk’s Emergency Management Coordinator Captain James T. Judkins said Thursday that firefighters responded to the call at 8:49 p.m. Wednesday and battled the blaze until 1:13 a.m.

&uot;Fire units arriving on the scene found the house at 3500 Desert Road completely engulfed in flames that were threatening to spread to brush around the house,&uot; said Judkins. &uot;The firefighters quickly got the fire under control and kept it away from the brush. The Whaleyville Fire Department assisted with the call and the Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad was on the scene.&uot;

The house was valued at $20,000 and it is a total loss.
