Staff report

Bob Shreeves snared the lead on lap 51 and burned all the way to his first career Late Model Stock Car victory Friday night at the Southampton Motor Speedway, holding off Mike Conner by less than 2.5 seconds for the win.

&uot;I’ve been fighting mighty hard to win and we finally done it,&uot; said Shreeves , who at 58 was the oldest SMS driver to win a Late Model race. &uot;I’m so happy, I can’t tell you. I’m gonna win next week. Once I start, it’s gonna be hard to stop me.&uot;

Before Shreeves could become unstoppable Friday, he had to fight his way up from his seventh-place start. Monty Buckles took an early lead, and Mike Conner overtook him on lap four. Tim Peters motored his way to second on the next lap, and to first on lap seven.

Peters quickly opened a comfortable lead, and Phil Warren came up behind Buckles. Shreeves moved in, overtook both Warren Buckles on lap 47, and cut into Peters’ half-straightaway advantage. On lap 50, Peters blew a tire and headed to the pits, allowing Connor the first-place spot. Shreeves took it for himself on the next lap, and drove to a five-length lead. Meanwhile, Travis Miller scooted under Warren on lap 64, while Buckled held on for fifth place.

Warren and Ken Rountree battled it out for the first three laps, with Warren nosing ahead and clearing Rountree on lap four. Gary Weeks pulled toward the front after a caution flag on lap 34, while Shawn Balluzzo overtook Rountree. Warren won by three lengths.

Daniels made his way past Crites on lap four and tailed Falk until lap 12, when he ducked under the backstretch and charged away by three lengths, a lead he never relinquished.
