It’s common to see Aaron Stacy scoring goals for Lakeland. It’s not so usual to see him stopping them.

But the senior Cavalier did both in his team’s 1-0 victory over crosstown rival Nansemond River Thursday evening, completing a 2003-4 &uot;Suffolk Sweep&uot; for the Cavaliers. Temporarily forced into goal by a penalty, Stacy fought off a penalty shot and several other shots to preserve the shutout.

A remarkably even but overly aggressive scoreless tie (five yellow cards and two red cards were handed out in the game, and over 30 fouls were called) was broken with less than a minute left in the first half. Gary Tull took a throw-in up the left sideline and drove a long hooking pass to Stacy on the right side. Stacy outran a pair of defenders and shot the ball into the left corner of the net for his team’s only goal.

Midway through the second half, Stacy came through on the other side of the ball. After starting keeper Jeff Gilmet was sent to the sidelines for fouling a River player, Stacy put on the keeper shirt.

River’s Amine Narshi slammed a penalty stroke toward the right side of the goal, and Stacy dove for it. The ball bounced off his chest and went farther to the right. Narshi came up and kicked it again, and the ball bounced off Stacy’s arms and went out of bounds. Though both teams had several scoring chances in the remainder, neither was able to knock in a shot.

The girls contest was more one-sided, as Katelyn Yandle scored two goals and Natasha Hill and Heather Proffitt one each as the Lady Warriors defeated their crosstown rivals 4-0 at Lakeland.

Over at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, the five Lady Saints seniors and two scorekeepers went out winners in a 2-0 defeat of Greenbrier Christian. In her farewell performance, Britney Bishop scored the first goal on an assist from Heather Bradshaw, then knocked an assist to Kristin Crawford, who headed in her second goal of the season and the last of her NSA career.

&uot;I always wanted to head in a goal, because it looks cool,&uot; Crawford said. Hollis Gwaltney, Stephanie Vallez, Nicole Speight and scorekeepers Jessie Dobson and Laura Dolan also said goodbye.

Bishop, who made All-TCIS two years ago and probably will this year (the team will be announced next week) led the team in scoring for 2003-4.
