James Winslow bunted home Jeff Cooper in the bottom of the fifth inning to cap off Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s 11-1 &uot;Senior Day&uot; victory over Walsingham Friday. The Saints regained the hitting prowess they didn’t show in Thursday’s loss to Greenbrier Christian, and grabbed some momentum heading into the TCIS tournament next week, where NSA will be going for its second consecutive title. Winslow, Ryan Johnson, Lee Duplain, Bo Garner, Ronald Ricks, Todd Harrell and Chase Goodwin went out winners in their final regular season home game, though NSA will host its first tournament game on Tuesday.

Cooper got things started by blasting a home run over the right field fence in the first inning, and Johnson led off the second with a single up the middle. Bryan Breedlove and Matt Tuttle were hit by pitches, and Johnson scored on a wild pitch. Garner and Cooper singled in runs, and Garner scored when Harrell grounded out.

Johnson singled to left in the third, and Breedlove was hit again. Tuttle blooped a doubled down the right field line, allowing Johnson to grab a 6-0 lead.

The Trojans scored in their half of the fourth, and Harrell took a pitch in the side with one out in the bottom of the inning. He scored on a double by Adam Keeling, who stole third and scored on a blown pickoff. James Winslow doubled down the left field line, and scored on a single by Johnson.

Garner and Cooper singled in the fifth, and Harrell drove in Garner with a one-baser of his own. Keeling singled the bases loaded, and Winslow bunted to the right of the mound, scoring Cooper to go home early.

In other recent diamond action, Lakeland exploded in a 15-0 victory over host Indian River on Thursday, with Rachel Bailor recording her first shutout. The Lady Cavaliers scored nine runs in the third inning. The Lakeland baseball team had a tougher time of things, but managed to come out on top, as Chase Nelson doubled in two runs in the top of the seventh for a comeback 4-3 victory.

Nansemond River also needed a late comeback in a 4-3 win over host Deep Creek Thursday, as Megan Belch secured the win with a two-run single in the top of the seventh. The Warrior baseball team wasn’t as lucky, as Deep Creek scored in the bottom of the ninth to grab a 3-2 win.

The Suffolk teams finish their regular season Tuesday at Lake-land. River swept their crosstown rivals earlier this season.
