Staff report

Three accidents took place Tuesday afternoon within the space of one hour, but only one was a fatality.

Lt. Debbie George, Suffolk Police spokesperson, said last night that the first occurred at 2:28 p.m. at the 58 Franklin bypass near Papermill Road. In that mishap, a bobtail tractor (one that’s not carrying a load) struck an arrow board in the rear. The tractor ran off the road into the woods, flipped over a few times only to land right side up. The driver was flown by Nightingale to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

The next accident happened at 2:56 p.m. at the intersection of Bennett’s Pasture and Kings Highway. No further details were available.

The third happened at 3:27 p.m. in the 5300 block of Bennett’s Pasture Road. A 2004 Honda going southbound struck a northbound 1991 Saturn Coup head on. Luis Rivera, the driver of the latter vehicle, was also flown to Sentara via Nightingale, but he died at the hospital, according to George. Laura Vann of the first vehicle was taken to Obici Hospital.

All three accidents are still under investigation, said George.
